Improve our Financial Aid System

According to the College, 44% of students rely on financial aid to attend Middlebury. Like many Middlebury students, my college choice depended on my financial aid package. Financial aid is an issue I am incredibly passionate about and have worked on over the past three years. With the goal of assessing student’s feelings towards the financial aid system, I want to conduct a student-wide survey addressing everything  from the completion of required financial aid forms, the amount you were or were not awarded, and any other issues that students have with financial aid here at Middlebury. In my experience, Middlebury’s Student Financial Services staff are incredibly talented and work very hard at what they do, but there can be a disconnect between the work they put in and the way some students feel about our financial aid system. This survey would serve as useful data for the office of Student Financial Services. Once conducted, I will share the results of the survey with the office of Student Financial Services and work with them to address student concerns.

Create a J-term workshop fund

Some of the J-term workshops like blacksmithing and dog sledding look incredibly cool, but their price tag makes them extremely inaccessible to many students on campus. Since the point of the workshops is to give students the chance to explore and try new things that we would normally not have the time or opportunity to do, I would like to start a fund where especially passionate students can apply to get financial aid to participate in a J-term workshop. Ideally, this would also be open to students who wish to learn how to ski or snowboard!
